Before day 1

Pick one easy plant for your light — a pothos, snake plant or ZZ plant. Read its profile once. That's the only homework.

Week 1 — let it settle

  1. Day 1: Unbox and place it

Put it in the light you bought it for. Don't repot yet — a new plant needs to settle, not a shock.

  2. Day 2: Check the soil

Push a finger 2–3 cm in. If damp, leave it. This one check replaces every watering rule you've heard.

  3. Day 5: Dust-free glance

Look at the leaves. Anything weird? Probably nothing. You're just learning what "normal" looks like.

  4. Day 7: First water (maybe)

Only if the soil is dry an inch down. Water thoroughly, let it drain, empty the saucer. No schedule yet.

Week 2 — build the habit

  1. Day 10: The finger test again

Same check, different day. You're training your eye, not following a calendar.

  2. Day 14: Rotate a quarter turn

Plants lean toward light. A small weekly turn keeps it upright and even.

  3. Day 16: Resist fertiliser

Not now. A healthy new plant doesn't need feeding for months. More plants are burned than starved.

Week 3 — read the signs

  1. Day 21: Compare to week 1

New leaf or steady? Good. Drooping on wet soil? Ease off water. Yellow on dry soil? Drink soon.

  2. Day 24: Wipe the leaves

A damp cloth once. Clean leaves photosynthesise better and look better. That's the whole task.

  3. Day 26: No panic

One yellow leaf is normal aging, not a crisis. Only worry if many go at once.

Week 4 — make it routine

  1. Day 28: Set one reminder

A weekly "check the plant" nudge beats a "water the plant" nudge. You decide after looking.

  2. Day 30: Decide on repotting

Only if roots circle the pot or water runs straight through. Otherwise leave it — snug is fine.

  3. Day 30: Celebrate

You kept a plant alive a month. That's the hard part done. The rest is repetition.

What to ignore

  • "Water every Sunday." Your plant doesn't know the day. Check the soil.
  • "Talk to it / play music." Harmless but optional. Light and water matter; playlists don't.
  • "Mist daily for humidity." Brief and useless. Group plants or use a pebble tray — see the humidity guide.
  • Every yellow leaf. One is fine. Patterns are the signal.

One plant at a time

Master this one before collecting more. The habits you build in 30 days transfer to everything you buy next — and you'll lose far fewer.

Where to go next

Keep the cheat sheet handy, or use the space finder when you're ready for plant number two. Stuck on a symptom? The troubleshooting guide usually has it.
