1. A bright window you can stand in front of
South or west window, or a few feet back from an unshaded east one. This is the easiest room to fill.
Best picks: fiddle leaf fig (if you've got the light and the nerve), monstera, succulents, and spider plant. Read the light guide to confirm what "bright indirect" really means.
2. A dim corner or a north window
Low light is not no light — it's steady, soft light with no direct sun. Buy for it and stop fighting it.
Best picks: snake plant, ZZ plant, pothos, heartleaf philodendron. Full list on the low-light plants page.
3. A humid bathroom
If the mirror fogs after a shower, you've got a humidity spa. Most plants that hate dry air will love it here.
Best picks: calathea, peace lily, spider plant, pothos. See the bathroom plants guide.
4. A bedroom
You want calm, low-maintenance, and (if you share the bed with a cat or dog) non-toxic. Bedrooms are often lower light, so lean easy.
Best picks: spider plant and calathea (both pet-safe), or a forgiving pothos if no pets chew. More on the bedroom plants page.
5. A desk or office
Fluorescent light, forgotten weekends, dry air. You need a plant that forgives absence.
Best picks: snake plant, ZZ plant, pothos — all shrug off a missed watering.
